You know how life sort of sneaks up on you? Or I was told that it was supposed to. That's a lie. Life didn't sneak me anywhere. Nope, it threw me headlong into things. I dragged my feet at first, but it's over now. I'm repeating two years of High School now, but most everyone is, because the school blew up.
Yeah, that makes absolutely no sense at all, does it? I'll elaborate.
When I was fifteen I started at Midgar High School. It was the largest school in the city, and catered to all walks of life. It upheld all the appearances of a melting pot, having randomly thrown us together to try to make adults out of us. I tested into high level classed (aside from math, but that's not the issue) and started on the football team.
My "father" was thrilled. My whole life I'd been taught to fight. My mom, Jenova, doted on me, I know that now, and I know why now, because there were things going on behind the scenes that none of us were supposed to know about.
I'm going to have to jump back a good number of years now, so forgive me. Before any of us were born, there was a very wealthy man named Finn ShinRa. Finn was the sort of man that could buy the moon or something poetic if he wanted, but he wanted an army of monsters instead. Rich people, I've decided, make no sense.
He hired four young and upcoming scientists to start his research project. They were a set of married couples, the Gasts and the Hojos. Linus and Lucrecia Hojo were darker than the Gasts, far more twisted and ambitious. They had very few ambitions other than being part of some new world order, whereas Ifalna and Dr Gast were hippies. From the purest sense of the word, I mean that. They are good people.
The four intrepid scientists made their way to a small island where the people spoke a strange language and they worshipped a warrior goddess from beyond the stars. Her name, they learned upon speaking to her, was Jenova.
Jenova immediately entranced Lucrecia, or perhaps it was the other way around. Regardless they took the goddess of war back with them, and only Lucrecia knew of promises of a battlefield.
The experiments began then, and they outlasted old Finn ShinRa. They resulted in the setting up of a school, under Principal Rufus ShinRa. Rufus had a set of "control" students that he didn't think would amount to anything. Little did he know that there's nothing mundane or normal about people.
The first round of students is the one that I was in, along with the little hippie girl that lived next door to me. Aeris Gast, half drugged out of her mind, and yet, probably the most put together person I've ever met. Along with us was a mental patient, Vincent Valentine, who isn't as bad as he wants to think. Tifa, a little witch with a soft voice. Shera was the other special addition, programmed to be a planner, pushed to being mental perfection. Tseng, who was supposed to be a corporate pet. We were supposedly the experimental students, the ones that would get somewhere in Rufus' army.
The mundane ones are the reason we have a second chance. Reno, Yuffie, Elena, Zack, Cloud and Cid (rest in peace). Cloud and Reno aren't normal any longer though, and that is my fault, I suppose.
You see, Reno wasn't normal in any sense of the word and I suppose I wasn't either. Attraction wasn't something I wanted or understood, I was male, captain of the football team, the best and brightest. My "father" Dio, would not understand me wanting to go to an art school, let alone being gay.
I threw the biggest game of my High School life. I came out of the closet, I was thrown out and I moved in with Reno. Because of that, Cloud took my place in more ways than one, but together the whole group of us stood up and made something change.
We lost a friend, but we're free now. With side effects that are to be expected. I still want to kill things, but a pack of matches and pills from the Gasts are keeping Reno and I sane. Glasses help my eyes, Cloud's always around.
In fact, strange as it may sound, living with Cloud, Tseng and Vincent may be the first thing I'm looking forward to. Super powers be damned, now I have to get into college. We have a slew of new teachers, some councilors, and Principal Veld Dragoon.
I'm going to be normal if I have to burn a town down, I swear. (joking, Spike)
